Coma is a Free Online Games style adventure game, by Thomas Brush, that invites players to step into a world of imagination and uncertainty. The game begins when the main character, Pete, wakes up and finds that everything in his life is different.
Instructions:
Players join Pete on a mission to save his sister and along the way they meet some fascinating characters.
Coma goes into the realm of the subconscious and mirrors a dreamland, which borders on the creepy, off colour and even becomes disturbing at times. The background music and graphics are remarkable and make just watching the game enjoyable. The serene feeling of a dream is effortlessly portrayed throughout the game and offers a welcome release from reality. One of the more difficult challenges of the game is to determine whether the main character is in reality or a dream.
Coma uses a platform game style and is navigated with the left, right, and up arrows. When Pete encounters other characters in the game, he will often engage in conversations. By clicking the mouse you can speed up these conversations. A fun aspect of the game is that the dialogue can be personalized. Sometimes, when Pete is asked to answer a question or make a decision, he can choose from two different choices. These choices are usually positive or negative. While this feature doesnt alter the game, it does add some fun with the dialogue and story.
Comas main storyline is that Pete awakens to find he is in a different world. Pete then finds that his father has locked his friend Birdie, who is a bird, in a cage. Birdie tells Pete that his father has locked his sister in a cage as well and Pete must save her. Pete encounters a small boy and girl who offer important information for his quest to save his sister. Pete also encounters Fat Simeon, who needs Pete to help him get out of trouble. Pete enters the Silver Chute, after he helps Fat Simeon, and runs into a large worm. Pete must let the worm swallow him to continue his journey.
The next obstacle is passing through Shill Bend, where left is right and right is left. While on his way to the havens, where Mama Gomboysa resides, Pete passes a musician playing a song that sounds familiar to him. Maama Gomboysa offers Pete and Birdie some helpful information about Petes sister. Pete then travels back to the house, where the story began, to find himself in the same basement where his sister is it is rumored to be imprisoned. From here, only a few more minutes of gaming remain and it wouldnt be fair to reveal any of the final secrets from this point. The ending of the game does not wrap up into a nice, neat package with a normal ending. However it does allow resolution for Pete and his mission to save his sister.
Comas is a game that pushes the boundaries of the players imagination. The ending is very suitable and offers little in the form of declaration, but more in the realm of reflection. Some gamers consider the ending to be vague and open to interpretation. That may be the case, but one thing is for certain, the region between reality and dreams are more than meets the eye.
